Today’s reading: Isaiah ch. 45

And the king of Israel said unto Jehoshaphat, There is yet one man, Micaiah the son of Imlah, by whom we may inquire of the LORD: but I hate him; for he doth not prophesy good concerning me, but evil. And Jehoshaphat said, Let not the king say so.
1 Kings 22:8

The godless king Ahab and the God-fearing king Jehoshaphat had become allies in order to go to war together. It was an unequal yoke!
Before the battle, Jehoshaphat wanted to ask God for wisdom. But Ahab had long since rid himself of all the faithful prophets in his kingdom. The false prophets who said only what he wanted to hear advised him to go to war. But Jehoshaphat insisted that the only prophet of God available should be fetched. He prophesied Ahab’s death in that war so willfully begun. In his anger, Ahab had him imprisoned him with only bread and water, engaged the battle and was killed the same day.
Many people react like Ahab when God’s message affects them. They accept a sprinkling of religion, but if the Word of God tells them that they are lost sinners and are faced with eternal death, they refuse to listen. The prophet in our account above was not the only one to be locked away because of his fearless announcement.
What would we say of a farmer who wanted good weather for his harvest and smashed the barometer because it forecast rain? We must face reality. God does not wish to annoy us. If His Word gives us disconcerting information, then it is because He wants to awaken our conscience, being “not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance” (2 Peter 3:9). “For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men” (Titus 2:11).

Two discouraged disciples were reasoning among themselves...

Ought not the Christ to have suffered these things and to enter into His glory? And having begun from Moses and from all the prophets, He interpreted them in all the Scriptures the things concerning Himself.

Are You Feeling Insecure? (3)

‘The Lord…said to me, “Now, I have put my words in your mouth.” ’
Jeremiah 1:9 NIV

The people God calls usually start out feeling ill-equipped and insecure. Indeed, if you jumped and said, ‘No problem, Lord, I can handle that,’ He wouldn’t call you at all. You say, ‘but...More
