In the books of the Bible written by the apostle John light is...

The true light was that which, coming into the world, lightens every man.
John 1:9 (J.N.D.).

In the books of the Bible written by the apostle John light is an important subject alongside life and love. In John's gospel we read that Christ said of Himself: "I am the light of the world" (ch. 8:12).
What does this imagery mean? In the first place, another statement by John helps us: "God is light, and in him is no darkness at all" (1 John 1:5). In the Bible darkness stands for evil, light for what is pure and good. That God is light signifies that God is good absolutely.

By contrast, mankind is in darkness by nature. Our entire being is marked by sin, particularly our heart, where man's decisions are made: "From within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts" (Mark 7:21). We do not have to be influenced externally first to do evil; everyone has wickedness in himself from the start.

But the message of Jesus Christ shines brightly into this world's darkness. Through Him we are placed in the light. His perfect life, His good deeds and words expose our evil motives, thoughts, words and deeds. His unselfishness reveals our egotism. His humility shows up the pride we have. His perfect obedience towards God makes our disobedience and rebellion towards Him clear.

When this "true light" shines in our heart, we see our sinfulness and guilt before God, and it hurts! However, it is the pre-requisite for recognising His love and mercy. God wishes to forgive us. But we must realise that we need His forgiveness.

Today's reading: Daniel 2:31-49 · Psalms 38:12-22
