Two of Jesus’ disciples were returning downcast from...

They constrained him (Jesus), saying, Abide with us, for it is toward evening, and the day is far spent. And he went in to stay with them.
Luke 24:29.

Two of Jesus’ disciples were returning downcast from Jerusalem to their home village of Emmaus. The leaders of the people had condemned their Lord and Master in a totally unjust court case. Now he had died on the cross. Every hope that their nation would be liberated and conditions would improve had been dashed.

On their journey a stranger suddenly joined them. At first it seemed as if he had heard nothing of the events in Jerusalem. Then an interesting and intense conversation developed concerning indications and announcements of the sufferings of the Christ in the Old Testament books written centuries before.

It was evening when the three travellers finally reached Emmaus. The stranger acted as if “he would have gone farther” (v. 28). Readers know already that it was Jesus the Lord, who had accompanied the disciples unknown to them. After Jesus had spoken to them extensively about Himself, the Saviour and Redeemer, about His great love and sufferings, He awaited their reaction. And they did not hesitate. Although they had not recognised Him, they invited Him in. They were attracted by His Person, His words and the way He had explained the Christ: their heart burned within them (cf. v. 32). Only then did the Lord reveal Himself without speaking.

For us today there remains the question: Won’t you allow the One who suffered on the cross of Calvary and died for you into your lives? Would you prefer Him to pass you by, leaving you with your doubts, your hopeless state and your guilt? What is your answer?

Today’s reading: Daniel 8:15-27 · Acts 2:37-47

CAN SATAN RIGHTLY ACCUSE YOU?

Besides discouragement, another weapon Satan uses often against believers is their weaknesses. He simply studies an individual for a period of time and not long after, he identifies the fellow’s weakness and capitalizes on it. Take for instance Peter. Satan discovered that Peter is a cowardly person-lacking in...More

KNOWLEDGE IS LIMITED

Wisdom is commonly defined as the correct application of knowledge. Wisdom therefore feeds on knowledge, and the type of knowledge applied determines the type of wisdom you get. According to the Bible, there are many kinds of wisdom. There is the wisdom of words in 1 Corinthians 1:17, the wisdom of the world in...More
