What is news?

The gospel of Christ … is the power of God to salvation for everyone ho believes.
Romans 1:16.

What is news?
Every newspaper reporter knows the quotation of a famous American journalist: “Dog bites man – no news; man bites dog – that’s news.” News must be something that really catches people’s attention. Routine matters interest no-one; so newspapers blaze eye-catching headlines on their front page to ensure that the article is read.

The word “gospel” signifies “good news”. The Greek original, “evangelion”, was the word used for the news a messenger brought after a victorious battle, which was “good news” indeed. So the gospel is really news of victory.

Through His death and resurrection Jesus Christ won the victory over the great enemy who had opposed God and brought mankind under his power: the devil. The victory was simultaneously one over sin and death.

The news of this victory fills the New Testament and is propagated throughout the world, so that all can benefit from the victory that Jesus Christ obtained. We must, however, believe in the Son of God and claim His atoning death for ourselves. Then the news of His victory will develop its power in our life and bring us blessing.

Gospel, good news, the proclamation of victory: the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ is the news of the greatest victory ever won. It differs from and supersedes every other news item. It is the one piece of news that we cannot afford to ignore, or we shall suffer fatal consequences: the judgment of God!

Today’s reading: Job 21:1-34 · Acts 12:12-25

TIME TO WAR

There are times when you have to make war. Sometime ago, I was walking round our Camp ground praying and I saw two snakes. Would you say I should leave the snakes to go on their own? If I leave them to go, they would grow to become bigger and who knows, they could come back and attack me or any of my children....More
