Before the young man found faith in Jesus Christ, he had...

Jesus said to them, Have you never read the scriptures: “This was the Lord’s doing”?
Matthew 21:42.

Before the young man found faith in Jesus Christ, he had never read the Bible or attended a church service. But God found him, and he started reading the Bible just at the time when he badly needed it.

The Bible course that he had started dealt with Matthew’s gospel. But it proceeded so slowly that he read on well ahead. He had soon finished the four gospels in his pocket New Testament. Then someone drew his attention to the Old Testament. His reaction was: “What’s the good of that? How can it help me?”

How? He was given three examples that Jesus Christ Himself had used:

In Luke 11:30 the Lord said: “Jonah became a sign to the Ninevites”. The young man had read about Jonah in the belly of the great fish in Matthew 12:40. But only in the book of Jonah in the Old Testament could he discover how Jonah got there and who the Ninevites were.
In Luke 17:32 he had read the Lord’s order “Remember Lot’s wife.” For him that was impossible, since he had never read the story of Lot in Genesis 19.
In Matthew 24:37 the Lord referred to “the days of Noah”. The young man had heard of the ark and the flood. He did not know, however, that people were so wicked in Noah’s time that God said: “I will destroy man … from the face of the earth” (Genesis 6:7).
These three Old Testament reports showed the young man not only historical details but, above all, the effect of sin, how God regards sin and what God’s will is regarding His people. That is why the Old Testament is an integral part of God’s Word.

Today’s reading: Job 30:1-31 · Acts 14:19-28

OF KEYS AND DOORS

Every apartment or compartment with a lock has its key. It takes a key to open the gate of a house and several keys to enter the house its rooms. If you have fridge, car or wardrobe, you will equally have their keys. From the foregoing therefore, it is apparent that several good things with value have their...More

Blessed is everyone who fears the LORD, who walks in His ways…

Blessed is everyone who fears the LORD, who walks in His ways…Behold, thus shall the man be blessed who fears the LORD.
(Psalm 128:1,4 ESV)

The Lord has promised blessing to the man who fears Him. Scripture is clear that the entire family is impacted when the head of the home and...More

BE DETERMINED TO WAIT

There is a waiting period that precedes the manifestation of great expectations. The gestation period of an African elephant is the longest of all mammals. It lasts for about 22 months, which is almost two calendar years. Contrast this with that of a rat which is just about 20 days. If your expectation is great,...More

SCHEMING NOT ALLOWED

In Numbers 16, we read of a highly explosive rebellion that rocked God’s people in the wilderness. Some leaders were not satisfied with the level of assignment God had apportioned to them. Instead of going through Moses to God to ask if there could be an expansion of their job description, they began to eye the...More
