Even the Lord Jesus was surprised at the words and the...

The centurion answered and said, Lord, I am not worthy that you should come under my roof. But only speak a word, and my servant will be healed.
Matthew 8:8.

Even the Lord Jesus was surprised at the words and the faith of that Roman centurion. Let us examine the details more closely. The officer had asked the Lord to heal his servant. It is remarkable enough that the centurion sympathised with his suffering servant. But he was firmly convinced that Jesus Christ could heal, and even at a distance!

Such a thing was unheard of even among believing Jews. Hardly any of them would have expected it of that Teacher, Jesus of Nazareth. The Roman officer, on the other hand, expressed his absolute faith in Him.

Then the centurion added: “I also am a man under authority, having soldiers under me. And I say to this one, ʻGo,ʼ and he goes; and to another, ʻCome,ʼ and he comes; and to my servant, ʻDo this,ʼ and he does it.” He indicated that the Lord only had to give the order, for just as his own subordinates had to obey, the Lord, too, had authority and power over all. The Lord was impressed by the man’s faith and said so publicly.

The servant was indeed healed at the same time as this conversation took place.

Isn’t that centurion’s attitude a lesson for us? People in our time can still hear or read his testimony of Jesus Christ and follow his faith.

Today’s reading: Isaiah 44:14-28 · Hebrews 9:1-10
