In the Old Testament we find numerous types that...

He (Aaron) shall take some of the blood of the bull and sprinkle it with his finger on the mercy seat on the east side; and before the mercy seat he shall sprinkle some of the blood with his finger seven times.
Leviticus 16:14.

In the Old Testament we find numerous types that speak of the Lord Jesus and His work of redemption. Among them the "Great Day of Atonement" in Leviticus 16 is of particular significance.

However, the perfection of the Lord Jesus is far superior to the types. He did not need to bring an offering for any sins of His own and then for the people (cf. Hebrews 7:27). Aaron, on the other hand, had to make atonement for himself and his house. He did so by sacrificing the young bull mentioned in the verse above.

Aaron took the blood of that sacrifice into the "Holiest of all" and sprinkled some on and in front of the mercy seat of the ark of the covenant in the tabernacle. The blood was first sprinkled on the mercy seat just once. The two cherubim over the mercy seat that signified God's governmental righteousness, looked down on it. And that blood, sprinkled once, covered the sinner's guilt before God.

God is able to appreciate the atoning death of the Lord Jesus and the value of His blood, by which His righteous claims have been fully met. God sees the blood before Him constantly, as it were.

Man might question whether he can truly approach God, especially because he senses painfully that he still sins as a believer. For this reason the blood was sprinkled on the mercy seat seven times on the Great Day of Atonement; it was a perfect testimony. Accordingly, the epistle to the Hebrews stresses the validity of the Lord's blood and sacrifice several times, so that we have liberty to "enter the holiest by the blood of Jesus" (cf. Hebrews 9:14; 10:14.19).

Today's reading: Isaiah 47:1-15 · Hebrews 10:11-22

One attribute of a champion is strength. The divine champion is one who receives divine strengthening....More
