Repentance

Repent therefore and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out.

God now commands all men everywhere to repent.

Acts 3:19; 17:30.

Repentance
What repentance isn't:

Repentance is not a sense of fear. Countless people call upon God in situations that are apparently hopeless. But when the difficulty has passed, and they are no longer afraid, they continue living as godlessly as before.

Repentance is not the same as pricks of conscience. Judas, who betrayed Jesus, was so conscious stricken that he was driven to suicide. But that was not repentance.

Repentance does not mean sensing one's own sinfulness. There are people who suffer so much because of their sins that they cannot sleep or eat. Yet they do not turn to God in repentance.

Repentance is not restricted to praying. It is possible to pray to God without a true conversion.

Repentance is not the renunciation of any particular sin. Even if one gives up a bad habit through one's own will power, one is not saved for eternity.

What repentance is:

Repentance is a thorough change of heart. Someone acknowledges that he has not asked after God and His will during his life so far, but then recognises that God the Creator has a just claim on his life and his obedience. He understands that God's standards are good, and in this light confesses his conduct hitherto and his guilt before God.

Whoever truly repents really turns from his own self-willed pathway to God. Repentance, conversion and faith all go together.

Today's reading: Isaiah 63:1-14 · Mark 2:18-28

Today God is calling you (3)

I have prayed for you, that your faith will not fail.' Luke 22:32 NASB

God wants you to do His will, but you'll never reach the place of spiritual maturity in which you're free of Satan. You can overcome him, but you can't eliminate him. Look at Peter. He had only one gear: overdrive. He was always...More
