What kind of freedom?

If the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed.

Stand fast therefore in the liberty by which Christ has made us free.

John 8:36; Galatians 5:1.

What kind of freedom?
Many men have risked their lives, and some have lost it, in the search for freedom. Today there is definitely more political liberty than there was a century ago. But is that true liberty? Aren't we all subject to many influences and thereby enslaved, even captured in many ways without always realising it?

One Man showed what true liberty is: Jesus Christ. In the gospel we discover a perfect Man whose prime aim was not to please His entourage. None of His sayings or deeds was motivated by the fear of others. His love of God and mankind was the sole driving force of His life. Even His critics told Him: "We know that you are true, and teach the way of God in truth" (Matthew 22:16).

Jesus Himself declared: "You shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free" (John 8:32).

What is this freedom? For those who believe in Jesus Christ, freedom is being able to do what pleases Him. They have been "delivered from the power of darkness" (Colossians 1:13), from the power of sin. They are no longer, as formerly, "serving various lusts and pleasures" (Titus 3:3). They have been given strength to please their Lord. But how? By asking Him for it through prayer, reading the Bible attentively, and being aware of their weakness.

Today's reading: Zechariah 1:18-2:13 · Mark 12:18-27

HAZARDING LIVES FOR MISSIONS

Within the space of a few years after the death and resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ, the gospel about Him had reached Rome, Alexandria, Antioch and all the great cities in Europe, Africa and Asia. The gospel had made great inroads into the aristocracy and among intellectuals, and had already changed the lives...More
