It was easy to see that he was quite satisfied with the...

He was despised, and we did not esteem him.
Isaiah 53:3.

It was easy to see that he was quite satisfied with the reason he gave for not accepting the calendar that I offered him. No, he didn't want one this time, as its place on the wall was already taken.

My thoughts now are not occupied with the place where the calendar hung, nor whether it got dusty on a shelf or landed in the rubbish bin. I am concerned about the place that Jesus Christ would like to have in our life. Could that be occupied by other things?

We know the saying: "Tell me who you go about with, and I'll tell you what kind of a person you are." We mean that from our choice of friends conclusions can be drawn regarding our own character. Permit me a variation in its formulation: Tell me how you go about with Jesus Christ, and I'll tell you what you are like. The place or esteem we afford Him reveals what we think of Him and what He means for us.

Many people who met Jesus Christ when He was on earth were impressed and even overpowered by Him. In the Bible we find some of His disciples' joyful exclamations that reveal amazement: Thomas said, "My Lord and my God!" Peter declared, "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God." John the Baptist pointed Him out, saying, "Behold! The Lamb of God!" And the disciples exclaimed in unison, "Truly you are the Son of God!" These forms of address, exclamations and descriptions were full of esteem, respect and love.

What place does Jesus Christ have in your life? Or have you given the place that He should occupy to something else?

Today's reading: Malachi 3:1-12 · Mark 16:1-11
