Tender, gentle dealings

A bruised reed he will not break, and smoking flax he will not quench.
Isaiah 42:3.

Tender, gentle dealings
This text about the "bruised reed" and the "smoking flax" (or: glowing wick) describes the manner in which the Lord Jesus deals with those among His redeemed who need encouragement amid their suffering.

The "bruised reed" illustrates a believer who, under the pressure and stress of external circumstances, has experienced a blow that he cannot cope with and from which his spiritual life of faith has suffered.

The "smoking flax" depicts a redeemed soul whose spiritual strength is almost extinguished. His trust in God is wavering, and his love of the Lord Jesus has diminished.

We have an example of these spiritual conditions in Luke 24:13-32. Two disciples were going from Jerusalem to Emmaus downhearted and disappointed. Their expectation of the kingdom of peace had been shattered with one blow through the crucifixion of their Master, whom they had recognised as the Messiah. They resembled a bruised reed. Their trust in God dwindled, their affection for Christ was growing cold. Their faith was but a feeble glow.

Then the Lord Jesus joined them and asked them some questions so as to deal gently with their problem. After listening attentively, He corrected their erroneous thinking without breaking the bruised reed. Christ had to suffer to be able to establish His glorious kingdom. Then He explained what concerned Himself in the Old Testament. That sparked their faith, so that their hearts burned for Him once again.

Today's reading: Exodus 12:29-42 · Luke 5:27-39

Jesus says to her, Mary. She, turning around, says to Him in Hebrew, Rabboni, which means Teacher. Jesus says to her, Touch Me not, for I have not yet ascended to My Father; but go to My brethren and say to them, I ascend to My Father and your Father, and to My God and your God.

We have not a high priest not able to sympathize with our infirmities, but tempted in all things in like manner, sin apart.

PROVOKING POSITIVE CHANGE

Change is one event that is constant in life. Change denotes movement from one state to another. There are two categories of change: positive and negative. Due to the fact that change can either be positive or negative, Africans would say: "Change is good for the poor but bad for the rich". Change in life is...More
