Authorities in the eastern Caribbean are scouring waters in the region in hopes of finding a missing U.S. couple who were aboard their catamaran Simplicity more than a week ago when police say it was hijacked by three escaped prisoners from Grenada.

Ralph Hendry and Kathy Brandel were likely thrown into the ocean and died, police in Grenada said Monday. "Information suggests that while traveling between Grenada and St Vincent, (the suspects) disposed of the occupants," Don McKenzie, police commissioner of the Royal Grenada Police Force, said at a news conference.

For some members of the LGBTQ community, the Taliban's comeback seemed too much of a risk, so they fled to neighboring Pakistan with countless other Afghan refugees.

A lavish painting of a mythological scene was among several newly discovered frescoes revealed Friday by archaeologists excavating the ancient Roman city of Pompeii.

Still astonishingly colorful some 2,000 years after the city was wiped out by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius, the frescoes were unearthed during restoration work around the mansion of the House of Leda.

Apple fined almost $2 billion by EU for giving its music streaming service leg up over rivals'

The European Union leveled its first antitrust penalty against Apple on Monday, fining the U.S. tech giant nearly $2 billion for breaking the bloc's competition laws by unfairly favoring its own music streaming service over those of competitors.

Apple banned app developers from "fully informing iOS users about alternative and cheaper music subscription services outside of the app," said the European Commission, the 27-nation bloc's executive arm and top antitrust enforcer.

That is illegal under EU antitrust rules. Apple behaved this way for almost a decade, which meant many users paid "significantly higher prices for music streaming...more

Millions of Americans overseas can vote — but few do. Here's how to vote as an American living abroad.

As millions of Americans headed to the polls in 15 states for Super Tuesday 2024, there were around 2.8 million Americans living overseas who were also eligible to vote in U.S. elections, according to government data. But historically, only a tiny percentage of these eligible expatriates actually cast ballots.

According to the Federal Voting Assistance Program, which helps U.S. expats vote, only 3.4% of eligible Americans overseas voted in the 2022 midterm elections. Americans living in the U.S. were over 18 times more likely to vote than those living abroad.

A man got 217 COVID-19 vaccinations. Here's what happened.

A 62-year-old man in Germany intentionally got 217 doses of COVID-19 vaccines within 29 months. The vaccinations occurred outside of a clinical study, and after hearing about the "hypervaccinated" man, medical researchers in Germany reached out to him to run tests.

The researchers first learned about the man, who they say got the vaccines "deliberately and for private reasons," when a public prosecutor in Magdeburg, Germany, opened a fraud investigation, according to a study published in The Lancet medical journal on Monday. The prosecutor confirmed 130 of the vaccinations and ultimately did not file criminal charges against the man.

Scientists have discovered the fossils of a new prehistoric species in Morocco — a bizarre-looking marine lizard considerably larger than a great white shark, which, they say, dominated the seas while dinosaurs roamed the earth.

The gargantuan creature, dubbed Kinjaria acuta, is estimated to have measured about 25 feet long, according to the scientists who studied its remains. Its unusually-shaped skull alone was about three feet from end to end, making both the skull and body size roughly comparable to that of a contemporary orca. Nick...more

Swedish archaeologists said they recently uncovered a trove of ancient relics, including a gold ring that was likely lost centuries ago.

Two archaeological investigations have been ongoing in Kalmar, a coastal city in southwest Sweden, according to the Archaelogists, which is part of the government's National Historical Museums agency. The investigation has looked at the medieval city built on the same grounds.

Researchers excavating the area have found around 50 medieval plots, about 10 streets and parts of an old city wall, the agency said. They've found major sites, including...more

The Great Barrier Reef – the world's largest reef system that's "one of the richest and most complex natural ecosystems on Earth" – is once again undergoing a mass coral bleaching event. Officials said the event, the fifth occurrence in just under a decade, appears to be the result of heat stress after a record-breaking year for global temperatures.

Sea turtle meat is considered a delicacy by Zanzibar's people even though it periodically results in deaths from chelonitoxism, a type of food poisoning.

The adult who died late Friday was the mother of one of the children who succumbed earlier, said the Mkoani District medical officer, Dr. Haji Bakari. He said the turtle meat was consumed Tuesday.

Proposal would allow terminal patients in France to request help to die

After months of deliberation and contemplation, President Emmanuel Macron announced at the weekend that he is backing a bill to introduce new "end-of-life" legislation in France for terminally ill patients.

"The term we retained is that of 'helping to die' because it is simple and human," Macron said in an exclusive interview with two French newspapers.

"There are cases we cannot humanly accept," he said, adding that this legislation would "look death in the face."

Macron revealed that the bill would allow a terminally ill person to self-administer a lethal substance or, in the case where a patient was not physically capable of that, he or she could...more

Industry leaders and academics gathered this week in Rome for the World Banana Forum issued a warning over the impact climate change is having on production and supply chains on a global scale. But some also suggested that price hikes on grocery store shelves now could help prepare the countries where the fruit is...more

A kitchen was set on fire and left full of smoke – because of the family dog

One U.K. family's home nearly went up in flames this week when their kitchen was set on fire and quickly filled with smoke. But the biggest surprise of the incident was the culprit – the family dog.

England's Essex County Fire and Rescue Service said that when responders arrived at the scene, the family's kitchen was "full of smoke." Firefighters had to use hose reel jets to distinguish the flames, which they were able to do quickly, before ventilating the property. All damage was contained in the kitchen.

Haiti's long history of crises, and its present unrest

How could Haiti even get to the point that its capital, Port-au-Prince, is paralyzed by armed gangs? For at least part of the answer, take a look at its history. You may find it hard to believe.

The island that Haiti shares with the Dominican Republic was visited by Columbus in 1492; he called it Hispaniola, claiming it for Spain. But Haiti eventually became a fabulously rich French colony, its plantations producing much of the world's coffee and sugar.

In 1791, the enslaved Africans who worked those plantations revolted. What followed was a 13-year bloodbath. Then, on January 1, 1804, Haiti traded the French flag for its own. It became the first Black republic, and abolished...more

It's been centuries since anyone lived here, but an American tour group has come to imagine what life might have been like when their ancestors called this land home. Visitor Reeda Taylor said, "To know that we've had relatives that probably rode horses out here? I mean, that's exciting. Jump those hedgerows, maybe lived in the castle. Who knows?"

More than 30 million Americans claim Irish ancestry. Worldwide, more than 70 million people have Irish roots. And yet, the current population of Ireland is only around five million people.

When is the first day of spring in 2024? What to know about the vernal equinox

When is the first day of spring in 2024? What to know about the vernal equinox

Spring has almost sprung; The vernal equinox, the official start date for the season in the Northern Hemisphere, arrives today. The 2024 spring equinox will occur at exactly 11:06 p.m. EDT on Tuesday, March 19.

But why does the day mark the start of spring and why only in the Northern Hemisphere?

What is an equinox?
There are only two equinoxes a year: vernal and autumnal. They happen when the sun is directly overhead at noon, creating nearly equal portions of day and night in a 24-hour period. The word equinox itself is derived from the Latin words aequus and nox, or equal night.

It usually falls on March 19, 20, or 21. A spring...more

U.S. drops from top 20 happiest countries list in 2024 World Happiness Report

Unhappy news for Americans: The United States is no longer among the 20 happiest countries in the world, according to new data from Gallup and its partners.

In the newly released 2024 World Happiness Report, the U.S. dropped out of the top 20 on the list for the first time in the report's 12-year history. The U.S. now ranks at No. 23, compared to No. 15 last year.

The researchers say this is driven in part by a decline in how Americans under 30 feel about their lives.

"In the US, happiness or subjective wellbeing has decreased in all age groups, but especially for young adults," Gallup managing director Ilana Ron Levey told CBS News in an...more
