Former professional wrestler Jimmy Rave died at the age of 39 following a series of amputations and years of drug addiction.

According to a statement released by his agent Bill Behrens and Rave’s daughter, Kailah, the wrestler, born James Michael Guffey, turned pro in 1999 and joined Ring of Honor in 2003 where he feuded with future WWE stars CM Punk and Bryan Danielson, among others. He later joined IMPACT Wrestling and a number of other promotion companies.

“Outside of wrestling,” the statement continued, “he held the position of Director of the Bartow County, Georgia Peer Support, Wellness, and Respite Center for several years. James had been struggling with drug addiction for many years. His struggles resulted in the amputation of his arm and, later, both of his legs.”

According to Wrestling Inc., Rave retired from wrestling after an infection led to his left arm being removed. Several months ago, a MRSA infection led to both of his legs being amputated, which inspired former WWE star Mick Foley to start raising money for Rave’s care.

“We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of James Guffey, otherwise known as Jimmy Rave,” IMPACT Wrestling said in a statement. “We offer our sincere condolences to his family & friends during this difficult time.”

No cause of death was given in either statement.
