God’s Creative Ways

The Israelites cried out to the Lord, and he gave them a deliverer. Judges 3:15

Today's Scripture
Judges 3:12, 15-16, 18-21, 26-27, 30

Today's Devotion
Paul’s neighbor and fellow church member Owen had been spreading damaging rumors about him. Feeling helpless, Paul prayed, “God, I’ll entrust this matter to You. Please let Owen realize his wrong.” Paul thought God might let their pastor talk to Owen or convict him through a Bible study. But God used a burst water pipe.

The frantic knocking at Paul’s door happened at midnight. “Help!” Owen gasped. “Even with the main valve shut, the water won’t stop flowing!” Paul, a plumber, worked for some time in the flooded bathroom, fixing pipes. Owen’s apology came soon after.

God’s help comes in unpredictably creative ways. Scripture says that when “the Israelites were subject to Eglon king of Moab for eighteen years” (Judges 3:14), they “cried out to the Lord, and he gave them a deliverer—Ehud” (v. 15). Skilled in the use of his left hand, Ehud strapped a sword to his right thigh, a spot where right-handed warriors wouldn’t hide a weapon; therefore, he wouldn’t be searched (vv. 15-16). Ehud used that sword to defeat Eglon—not on the battlefield, but in a private moment at the palace (vv. 19-21).

After this, under Ehud’s leadership, Israel had peace for eighty years (v. 30), the longest period of freedom in the time of the judges. Ehud’s story reminds us that God, in His wisdom and sovereignty, works in ways infinitely beyond what we can predict or imagine. He’s our creative God.

Reflect & Pray
When have you experienced God’s creative help? How has it encouraged you?

Dear God, thank You for Your help that comes in many forms.

Today's Insights
Ehud gained access with a deadly weapon to the Moabite king through a trick—hiding the weapon on the opposite leg that they would’ve searched (Judges 3:16). Ehud’s second trick was claiming to have a “secret message” only for the king’s ears (v. 19). The foolish king falls for this, leaving Ehud free to carry out his fatal act (vv. 20-23). Then he locked the doors, which convinced the servants the king was “relieving himself” (vv. 24-25). That delay gave Ehud time for a surprise attack on the Moabite army (vv. 27-29). All this happened through God’s providential help (vv. 15, 28). Today, we can trust that God will help us too, no matter what we face.

Two discouraged disciples were reasoning among themselves...

Ought not the Christ to have suffered these things and to enter into His glory? And having begun from Moses and from all the prophets, He interpreted them in all the Scriptures the things concerning Himself.

SPIRITUAL WARFARE I

When we are told to put on the whole armour of God, one thing becomes clear instantly. This is the fact that there is a God. We cannot be talking of the armour of God if there is no God. Anyone who thinks that there is no God is a fool (Psalm 14:1). You have to pray that God would reveal Himself to you. The...More
