The Indispensable Word of God
When Paul and Silas preached to the Bereans, it is recorded of them that they “were more fair-minded than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness, and searched the Scriptures daily to find out whether these things were so” (Acts 17:11). They searched it in order to test the veracity of what Paul and Silas preached. It must be searched diligently, and earnestly. We will gain little by a mere cursory or casual glance at it. We must read it and meditate on it, and as we do so we begin to see Christ in all the greatness and loveliness of His Person. Moreover, the Lord promises, “you will seek Me and find Me, when you search for Me with all your heart” (Jer. 29:13). “Your words were found, and I ate them, and Your word was to me the joy and rejoicing of my heart” (15:16). Jeremiah must have been searching, and he was rewarded, for he says, “Your words were found.” He found treasure. He found that which spoke of the Lord, and he ate what he found. The Lord Jesus is the Bread of God, and the Bread of life (Jn. 6:51–55). When we find some precious portion that speaks of Him and we eat it—that is, we take it in, and meditate on it—it becomes the joy and rejoicing of our hearts.

“Your word I have hidden in my heart, that I might not sin against You” (Ps. 119:11). We must endeavor not to let what we search for, and find, to slip away from us. We must hide it in our hearts, so that in times of trouble, grief, and temptation, we can call them to mind. Like Joseph who stored up grain for the days of famine, we must hide the Word in our hearts to sustain and comfort us in difficult days.
