The Mire and Deep Waters
How little do we enter into or understand the depths of the agony of the Lord Jesus when He was made an offering for sin on the cross of Calvary. In the New Testament we do not find such expressions of agony at the time of His crucifixion as we find here in Psalm 69. We are greatly indebted to the Old Testament, which provides some glimpses into the sorrow and anguish that deeply pressed upon His soul as He was being subjected, not only to the bitter and cruel persecutions of men, but to God’s unabated judgment on account of our sins.

Crying out to God in the midst of His sufferings, He asks to be delivered out of the mire—the mire of our sins for which He died. He also asks to be delivered from those who hate Him and out of the deep waters. Certainly He felt the vicious cruelty of His enemies who were persecuting Him at the very time that God was judging Him for our sins. It was this judgment of God that brought forth the “deep waters.”

We read that He “offered up prayers and supplications, with vehement cries and tears” (Heb. 5:7), and He was heard. His sacrifice was fully accepted. God heard Him and delivered Him, raising Him from the dead and setting Him at His own right hand in glory. The mire of our sins can never touch Him again, for He has fully atoned for all of our sins. Those who hate Him were totally defeated and can never again have any power over Him. And what about the deepness of those waters? Although at one time He sank in them, bearing the agony of the excruciating judgment of God, this can never be repeated. The Lord Jesus has fully exhausted the righteous judgment of God and is rewarded for eternity with glory infinitely higher than any other could ever have.
