Grace instead of law

You are not under law but under grace.
Romans 6:14

Grace instead of law
The Apostle Paul addresses this Bible verse to believers in Christ. They have believed in the gospel and have been saved. With this, they have started a new life with God. They are not under the obligation to keep the law because they have been set free from it. Their relationship with God is not determined by the commandments of “You shall” and “You shall not”. As believers, they voluntarily present themselves to Him and obey Him out of love.

If the law were the standard of their lives, they would not succeed in living for the glory of God. Why? Because the law does not provide the power to do good. It only presents God’s demands but it doesn’t make people capable of acting accordingly.

Therefore, believers are under grace, which instructs them to live a righteous and God-fearing life. At the same time, grace makes them capable and willing to do what pleases God. It directs their thoughts to the Lord Jesus, who loved them and gave Himself for them. Thus, grace gives the believer a strong motive to live for God.

Many think that the grace of God would lead believers to live a careless life, not being concerned about committing sins. However, the opposite is true: the awareness of grace leads them to avoid every sin. Out of gratitude for the salvation they have experienced, they no longer want to sin but desire to please their Saviour.

Today’s reading: Jeremiah 9:1-26 · Luke 21:29-38
