More than a museum

Therefore we also, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us.
Hebrews 12:1

More than a museum
In an art exhibition we can admire the paintings and sculptures of old masters. The varied representation of colours and forms, shadows and light attests to the expressive power of their creations.

In Hebrews 11, we find an impressive account of past heroes of faith. As we read, we are led through a gallery of men and women who trusted and obeyed God. However, this chapter is not in the Bible for us to merely admire their faith.

Notice the context in which Hebrews 11 stands! In chapter 10:38, the life of a Christian is summarised in one sentence: “Now the just shall live by faith”. Is faith in God enough? Can trust in God really help and provide support in difficulties? Yes! Look at Enoch, Noah, Abraham and Sarah! Consider Amram, Jochebed, Moses and Rahab! They all demonstrate the power of a life lived by faith.

At the beginning of Hebrews 12, the conclusion is drawn: Since we have so many examples of men and women of faith, “let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us”.

When visiting a museum, one is more inclined to admiration than imitation. However, while reading Hebrews 11 the desire should arise in us to imitate the faith of the individuals being presented.

Today’s reading: Jeremiah 24:1-10 · Romans 1:18-32

Not I but Christ

Whoever desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me.
