Christ prays to His Father
In the New Testament, two prayers of the Lord Jesus on the night before His crucifixion were recorded. Both are profound and evoke our worship. One prayer, spoken in the Garden of Gethsemane, reveals His sufferings in anticipation of what awaited Him on the cross at Golgotha. We find it in the Gospels of Matthew, Mark and Luke. The other prayer, shared with us in John 17, includes the glories of the Lord Jesus that followed His work on the cross.

Today, let’s reflect on His prayer in the Garden of Gethsemane as reported to us in the Gospel of Mark. When the Lord foresaw His sacrificial sufferings and death on the cross and laid out this distress before His Father, He was aware of three facts:

o “Abba, Father” – With this address, Jesus began His prayer. It expresses His complete trust in the love of the Father.

o “All things are possible for You” – Christ knew the power of the Father, which is capable of all things. In His deep distress, He unwaveringly held onto this.

o “Nevertheless, not what I will, but what You will” – Although the Lord Jesus was deeply troubled, He also rested in the will of the Father.
The Lord Jesus entrusted Himself to the love, power and will of the Father as His holy soul anticipated the profound sufferings on the cross.
