With an illustration, the Lord Jesus shows...

Enter by the narrow gate; for wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction.
Matthew 7:13

With an illustration, the Lord Jesus shows that every person faces a decision:

1. We can enter through the narrow gate. Then we come to the narrow path that leads to life. In John 10:9, the Saviour speaks of Himself: “I am the door. If anyone enters by Me, he will be saved.” Through personal faith in Him, we use this entrance to the way of life. Why is the gate narrow? Because it is necessary for us to acknowledge our guilt before God and believe in the Saviour who died for us on the cross. Only in this way can we enter through the gate and be saved. Yet this is precisely what we find difficult. We pride ourselves on our supposed righteousness and want to earn God’s approval ourselves. But that’s impossible.

2. Entering through the narrow gate requires us to repent and accept God’s grace. When we take this step, we receive complete salvation and eternal happiness.

Unfortunately, we can also go through the wide gate that lies invitingly before us. It corresponds to the unbeliever’s ideas of fulfilment and self-redemption. This entrance leads to the broad way that ends in destruction. Entering through the wide gate costs us nothing. However, the consequences of this decision are severe: we are lost forever.
“There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way of death.” (Proverbs 16:25)

Today’s reading: Joshua 13:15-33 · 1 Corinthians 11:20-34

MEAL OF REMEMBRANCE

The Holy Communion is a very significant meal. Unlike regular meals, it a meal of remembrance. When some people take this meal, they forget to heed the instruction in today's Bible reading where the Lord repeatedly said "this do in remembrance of Me". In other words, the meal reminds us of God's power of...More
