Don’t just watch!

And the people stood looking on.

And the whole crowd who came together to that sight, seeing what had been done, beat their breasts and returned.

Luke 23:35, 48

Don’t just watch!
A fisherman sat by the water, holding his fishing rod, waiting for a fish to bite. A stranger stood nearby watching him for a while. After a long silence, the stranger spoke to the fisherman: “I can’t imagine anything more boring than fishing!” – “There is,” replied the fisherman. “Watching it”!

Some people approach faith in Christ in the same way: They stand by for a while – watch a bit – and hastily form a conclusive judgment. They haven’t engaged with the matter itself at all. Is it any wonder that their verdict is: Not for me; I can’t imagine anything more boring! – Anyone who remains just a spectator and isn’t personally in a relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ will always be puzzled and mystified.

It’s similar with the Bible. It is a very instructive and also exciting book. Yet it is neither a theoretical textbook nor light entertainment. The extraordinary value of God’s Word is only unfolded to us when we take it into our hearts and let its transformative power work in our lives.

The crucifixion of Jesus was just a “sight” for many. They watched; and in the end they were even moved. But when they went home, they remained mere spectators. For the Roman centurion, however, the events left a deeper impression: “He glorified God, saying: ‘Certainly this was a righteous man’”; and: “Truly this Man was the Son of God!” (Luke 23:47; Mark 15:39)
