God blesses man by providing...
He (God) causes the grass to grow for the cattle, and vegetation for the service of man, that he may bring forth food from the earth.
Psalm 104:14
God blesses man by providing him with food. That was the case in the past – and it is still true today.
Since very few people are still in touch with agriculture, the awareness that our food is completely dependent on nature is being increasingly lost. Of course, today we can be very creative with food and refine it: we can change foods in shape, colour and taste, we can make them more resistant to pests and diseases, thus more productive, and we can even manipulate them genetically.
But one thing we cannot do (and this is elementary!): we cannot create food! We can breed, select and genetically modify seeds – but as a starting product we always need a seed. Without a seed there is no growth! And the seed comes from God, who said at creation, “Let the earth bring forth grass, the herb that yields seed, and the fruit tree that yields fruit according to its kind, whose seed is in itself, on the earth” (Genesis 1:11).
Therefore, it is God who provides me with bread, vegetables, meat and fish for my daily needs. Whether I realise it or not, I am dependent on God every day. He gives me food: without Him I cannot live! Every year, after the winter comes the spring, and every year God gives strength to the seeds to germinate, to sprout, to grow and to bear fruit. God has devised all of this so that I can live. Simply ingenious!
God made me and keeps me alive every day. Why? Because He loves me. For what purpose? So that I may honour Him, praise Him and thank Him:
“Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all His benefits”! Psalm 103:2
