Let's Talk About Heaven

Bible in a Year : 1 Kings 10-11, Luke 21:20-38

His eyes are like blazing fire, and on his head are many crowns.
Revelation 19:12

Today's Scripture & Insight : Revelation 19:11-16

Pastor Tom knew this would be their last conversation. The scent of death hovered over the hospital bed. Cancer had clawed its way through another frail, exhausted body. Yet Sophie’s eyes shone as she whispered, “Let’s talk about heaven.”

But their conversation didn’t focus on heaven as a place. They spent the next hour anticipating Jesus and His welcome. “Heaven felt very present in that room,” Tom later reflected. As he finally stood up to leave, Sophie called after him, “See you round the corner.” With her confidence firmly in Jesus, Sophie longed for heaven.

It strikes me that when the apostle John received his revelation and a vision of heaven, he too was focused on Jesus rather than a specific place towards the end. He describes Jesus as a mighty Warrior riding a white horse (Revelation 19:11), “[whose] eyes are like blazing fire, and on [whose] head are many crowns” (v. 12). This Rider comes armed for battle against a world where sickness, sin and death run rampant.

For Pastor Tom and Sophie, the hope of heaven lay in knowing its Ruler. As arresting as today’s image of Jesus is (see also v. 15), it is a powerful reminder that one day He will indeed bring heaven to His people. His name is “king of kings and lord of lords” (v. 16). Nothing—including the things we fear most—will be able to stand in His way.

Reflect & Pray
How do you react to the description of Jesus in Revelation 19:11-16? How can these words reassure you today about Jesus’ ultimate power and victory?

Dear Jesus, how good it is to stop a while and reflect on how awesome You are. I look forward to the day when You will bring me safely home to heaven.

UNCOVERING EVIL

The presence of the supernatural power of God in a church can take that church beyond limits.
It can also uproot the presence of evil in the midst of Gods children. In Acts 5, a couple were uprooted through this. If we are going to sanitise the church, we need the Holy Spirit. Just as we need Him to heal, save...More

And the angel of the LORD appeared unto the woman, and said unto her, Behold now, thou art barren, and bearest not: but thou shalt conceive, and bear a son. Now therefore beware, I pray thee, and drink not wine nor strong drink, and eat not any unclean thing: For, lo, thou shalt conceive, and bear a son; ...More

THE NON-LYING GOD (2)

In the hope of eternal life, which God, who cannot lie, promised before the ages of time, but has manifested in its own due season His word.
