My people have exchanged their glorious God for worthless idols. Jeremiah 2:11

Today's Scripture
Jeremiah 2:31-37

Today's Devotion
When Cheryl woke in the morning, she was horrified to find her kitchen had flooded overnight. Water pooled in her cabinets, around her sink, and behind the refrigerator. She hurried to call a plumber, who quickly diagnosed the problem: a faulty water filter under the sink. Cheryl spent the rest of her day removing the water from her kitchen and beginning the process of restoring her home from the damage. Sadly, many others have reported similar leaks; the filter seemed to have a flawed design.

As humans without perfect insight into the future, we have to put some degree of trust in the companies we purchase from as well as in the people around us. Sometimes that trust proves to be misplaced, even when we try to make wise choices. Unlike Cheryl’s shocking disaster, God’s people were warned that putting their trust in Egypt would lead to disappointment: “The Lord has rejected those you trust; you will not be helped by them” (Jeremiah 2:37).

Despite God’s warnings, Judah allied herself with Egypt and, indeed, fell prey to their enemies. Like Judah, we can place too much trust in “broken cisterns that cannot hold water” (v. 13), forgetting that our ultimate trust is in God alone. He invites us to put our trust in Him, the living water Himself. He’ll never fail.

Reflect & Pray
When have you placed too much trust in someone or something? How has trusting God proven to be the right decision?

Wise and trustworthy Father, please give me discernment in my earthly decisions as I put my ultimate trust in You.

Today's Insights
Forgetting and forsaking God often brought shame to those who’d been favored by Him. The image of people with “hands on [their] head” (Jeremiah 2:37) depicts those who are captive. Prominent alliances proved to be impotent sources of relief for those who’d once trusted in God (vv. 2-3). In Hosea’s day, God also called His people to return to Him. The prophet said, “Say to [the Lord]: ‘Forgive all our sins and receive us graciously. . . . Assyria cannot save us . . . . We will never again say ‘Our gods’ to what our own hands have made, for in you the fatherless find compassion” (Hosea 14:2-3). David also expressed the resolve of those who find safety and security in God alone: “Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the Lord our God” (Psalm 20:7). Today, God helps us put our trust in Him alone.

UNCOVERING EVIL

The presence of the supernatural power of God in a church can take that church beyond limits.
It can also uproot the presence of evil in the midst of Gods children. In Acts 5, a couple were uprooted through this. If we are going to sanitise the church, we need the Holy Spirit. Just as we need Him to heal, save...More

HIS PRESENCE, OUR BLESSING

There are many blessings in the presence of God. This is the key to drawing multitudes to the Lord through His presence in your life.
