Do It for God

Make it your ambition to lead a quiet life. 1 Thessalonians 4:11

Today's Scripture
1 Thessalonians 4:1-8, 10-12

Today's Devotion
The poster advertised a concert and sermon titled, “One Man on Fire for God Can Change the World.” I always need this reminder to grow in my love for Jesus. But I wonder about the “change the world” part. Is this something God expects?

Paul says we “please God” when we’re holy and love each other (1 Thessalonians 4:1-10). Basic, ordinary stuff. He adds, “Make it your ambition to lead a quiet life: You should mind your own business and work with your hands, just as we told you, so that your daily life may win the respect of outsiders and so that you will not be dependent on anybody” (vv. 11-12).

This doesn’t sound like a command to change the world, and that’s a relief! Only one Man can truly change it. And because He did, we don’t have to. The pressure is off; we can rest in Him. We are free in Jesus to do whatever He calls us to do. It might be a mundane task, and that’s okay. Do it for Him, and it counts (Colossians 3:17).

Of course we want to maximize our lives, but we needn’t worry that we haven’t done enough. So praise God for large assignments, and praise Him for small things too. Simply do whatever God has called you to do. Then get some sleep.

Reflect & Pray
What is the Jesus calling you to do today? How might you do it for Him?

Dear Jesus, I dedicate my normal tasks on this ordinary day to You.

Today's Insights
Paul instructs us “how to live in order to please God” (1 Thessalonians 4:1). We’re called to avoid sexual immorality and honor God with our bodies (vv. 3-8), to love others deeply (vv. 9-10), and to “lead a quiet life” (v. 11). As we grow in love, work with our hands, and live quietly and honestly before the world, we “win the respect of outsiders” (v. 12). As the Spirit helps us do what God has called us to do—whether in large assignments or small—our lives become a witness marked by holiness, integrity, and steadfast love.

THE HOLY SPIRIT

It is one thing to receive the anointing and another to keep growing on it. There are people who had the anointing, but today, everything has virtually ebbed out. It is possible to connect with the Holy Spirit and to continue to flow in the power of the anointing even at increasing levels. If this is your desire,...More

LEADERSHIP BY EXAMPLE

Read:
.
The essence of the anointing of God in your life is not for show but for service. Service is a fundamental aspect of leadership. The moment you remove service from your life, there is no room for good leadership. People should see the good example you are showing and praise God for your life....More

Apollo 15

You, Lord, in the beginning laid the foundation of the earth, and the heavens are the work of your hands. They will perish, but you remain. You are the same, and your years will not fail.
