People Worth Protecting

The foreigner residing among you must be treated as your native-born. Love them as yourself. Leviticus 19:34.

Today's Scripture
Leviticus 19:1-2, 33-37

Today's Devotional
During the horrors of World War II, the small French village of Le Chambon-sur-Lignon became a rare beacon of hope. Through the leadership of pastor André Trocmé and his wife, Magda, the villagers came together to save the lives of thousands of Jewish refugees. At great personal risk, they offered food, shelter and forged documents—simply because they saw it as the right thing to do. Pastor Trocmé said, “We do not know what a Jew is. We only know [people].” Trocmé’s words rejected the way the Nazi regime categorised some people as different—less valuable—than others, insisting that all people are people first, worth cherishing and protecting.

Pastor Trocme’s words reflect the heart of God’s command in Leviticus 19:34 for His people to treat foreigners “as your native-born.” Instead of falling into the all-too-easy temptation to see other people groups as different and therefore a threat, God called His people to find empathy by remembering their own mistreatment as “foreigners in Egypt” (v. 34).

When we think of other people as fundamentally different than ourselves, it becomes easier to overlook their pain. But as we follow God’s calling to love others as ourselves (Mark 12:31), He can give us the courage to stand for the vulnerable, no matter the cost.

Reflect & Pray
What can tempt you to not see others’ humanity first? How can you and your faith community cultivate courage in caring for others?

Heavenly Father, please give me the courage to care for all people as You’ve called me to, even when it’s costly.

Today's Insights
Much of the Mosaic law is found in the book of Leviticus. At Mount Sinai, Yahweh reintroduced Himself to His chosen people, Israel. During their centuries of captivity in Egypt, they’d drifted far from the God of their fathers (Ezekiel 20:5-8). So for them to be His people, they needed to know Him more. During their captivity, the children of Israel were transformed from being an enormous extended family (identified by the twelve sons of Jacob, see Genesis 46:26-27) into a great nation (Exodus 12:37). Any nation needs laws to govern and protect the people, and so the Mosaic law was established. Its purpose was to instruct the people in how to relate to both God and others. As we see in Leviticus 19, God commanded them to treat others well, especially the foreigner (vv. 33-37). Today as well, God will help us have the courage to love and care for all people.

BE TRULY ROOTED

You can overcome the attacks of the devil if you can simply obey God's Word. Before taking on the devil, be sure of your salvation because the salvation of many today is questionable. Many are pretenders and have really never answered the altar call for salvation at any time. At the time they should be answering...More

YOUR FIRST LOVE

As a Christian, your heart ought to be aglow with genuine love for Christ, unless you are not genuinely saved as a result of having not truly repented from your sins even though you have confessed Jesus. At the new birth experience, the Holy Spirit regenerates our spirit and fills it with deep and pure love for...More

Imitation or Genuine?

"All the prophets were prophesying before them. Then Zedekiah said, 'This is what the LORD says' All the prophets were prophesying this as well." - 1 Kings 22:10-12 NASB

Zedekiah understood what it meant to be a prophet. He knew the vocabulary and how to deliver prophecies. In similar ways, others...More
