Godliness (1)

Now godliness with contentment is great gain … But you, O man of God, flee these things and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, gentleness.
1 Timothy 6:6, 11

Godliness (1)
The Bible dictionary says that godliness is “the quality or practice of conforming to the laws and wishes of God; devoutness and moral uprightness; to be wise is to live in godliness, reflecting the nature of the kingdom of God in the course of everyday life.” This might be a good definition, but what does that mean? What does godliness look like? A working definition of godliness might be “a lifestyle that consistently reflects the character of God.”

The word “godliness” is found about sixteen times in the New Testament, mostly in the so-called Pastoral Epistles, First and Second Timothy and Titus. In 2 Timothy 3:5, Paul speaks of those who have a form of godliness, but deny the power of it. We can have an outward form of godliness, which means doing all the right things on the outside, but on the inside there is no substance, no reality. A life of true godliness has power connected to it, not simply a religious life going through certain outward routines, such as going to church or other religious activities. These things are good, but they do not have power to transform us. While it is important not to forsake the assembling together with other believers, that routine in itself does not have power to make me like Christ.

Let us go back to our working definition of godliness and ask a question: How can I make my lifestyle consistently reflect the character of God? The answer can only be by following after God, walking with Him daily, and allowing the Holy Spirit to transform me into the image of Christ.

Tim Hadley, Sr.

Like Thee in faith, in meekness, love, in every beauteous grace;

From glory into glory changed, till we behold Thy face.

In the hope of eternal life, which God, who cannot lie, promised before the ages of time, but has manifested in its own due season His word.
(Titus 1:2-3)

THE NON-LYING GOD (2)
I can lie. Titus could too, and so could the Cretans. But God can not lie. I can deceive. But...More

When You Have A Vision

I was not disobedient to the vision.' Acts 26:19 NIV

When God gives you a vision for your life, you need to know how to:

(1) Hold it. Your vision is governed by a time frame: If it seems slow in coming, wait patiently, for it will surely take place.' (Habakkuk 2:3 NLT) Some of us can...More

Thoughts on the Gospel of John (113)

He who loves his life will lose it, and he who hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life. If anyone serves me, let him follow me; and where I am, there my servant will be also. If anyone serves me, him my Father will honour.
John 12:25.26.
