Our Heavenly High Priest

Such a high priest became us, holy, harmless, undefiled, separated from sinners, and become higher than the heavens.
Hebrews 7:26 JND

Our Heavenly High Priest
Aaron and his sons were not at all suited to meet our need: their qualifications were far short of what is required. A high priest fully suited to us must have infinitely higher characteristics. First, He must be holy in character, having unvarying love of good and hatred of evil. Second, in conduct He must be harmless, having no element of disregard for the need or welfare of others. Third, in contact He must be undefiled, not in any measure contaminated by circumstances of corruption. And fourth, His communion must be separate from sinners, His entire path drawing a clear line of demarcation between Himself and those in a course of sin. All these characteristics are seen beautifully and perfectly in our Lord throughout His walk on earth. And none other in all history could even distantly approach Him: He stands alone in unique and blessed dignity.

But there is a fifth qualification: He must be made higher than the heavens. A mere earthly level of priesthood would not do. He must be given a position higher than all others—higher than angels—everything being subject to His sublime authority. Thus He can use all things in creation for the blessing of those for whose welfare He is appointed High Priest. How wonderfully are His people cared for!

-- L. M. Grant

O Lord, in Thee our eyes behold a thousand glories more

Than the rich gems and polished gold the sons of Aaron wore.

Their range was earth, nor higher soared; the heaven of heavens is Thine;

Thy majesty and priesthood, Lord, in peerless glory shine.

Immortal honors crown Thy name, Thou blessed Priest and King:

May heaven and earth resound Thy fame, each day fresh praises bring!

-- I. Watts

HOW PERSUADED?

In 2 Timothy 4:10, Demas - a co-labourer with Paul was floored by his love for the world. He became a victim of comfort. Today, many people are also becoming prayerless and shifting their or trust from God to uncertain riches. They are now tending towards the belief that money can fix everything. If you are in such...More

A LESSON FROM GOLIATH

At the first sight of David, Goliath despised him. He was amazed that the children of Israel could find no other man to fight him than a young boy. As if that was not enough, Goliath did not see any conventional weapon of war on David. So he asked, "Am I a dog?" The first lesson we have to learn from this story as...More

A MEMBER of parliament took his little daughter to visit Westminster Abbey. As she stood looking up at its magnificent columns, her father asked, What do you think, sweetheart?' With childlike candour she replied, I was...More

Forgive And Move On (2)

Anyone who starts ploughing and keeps looking back isn't worth a thing to God's Kingdom!' Luke 9:62 CEV

If you're wise, you'll do four things:

(1) Focus on the road ahead. By looking in the rear-view mirror instead of what's up ahead, you'll end up in a ditch. Focus on the fact you've...More
