Paul, Prisoner of Christ Jesus (13)—Last Words

I am already being poured out as a drink offering, and the time of my departure is at hand. I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Finally, there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will give to me on that Day, and not to me only but also to all who have loved His appearing.
2 Timothy 4:6-8 NKJV

Paul, Prisoner of Christ Jesus (13)—Last Words
After the great fire that destroyed much of Rome in 64 ad, many people thought that the emperor Nero had set the city on fire. He accused the Christians, whom the heathen often referred to as atheists for unlike the idolaters they had no visible images of God. He had some of their leaders, including Paul, arrested and brought to Rome. Writing to Timothy, Paul commends Onesiphorus, saying, he "was not ashamed of my chain; but when he arrived in Rome, he sought me out very zealously and found me" (1:16-17).

Paul, like the Lord Jesus Himself, had a keen interest in many individuals. Some he mentions with sadness or warns against. He also tells Timothy about the travels of several fellow-workers, mentioning that Luke was still with him. He requests that Timothy hurry to him and bring Mark who now, he says, "is useful to me for ministry." Timothy is also to bring the cloak Paul had left at Troas, "and the books, especially the parchments."

Paul's feelings and appreciation of the Lord and His interests were undiminished. The Lord had stood by him and strengthened him that the message might be fully preached. His pathway on earth was rapidly coming to its end. Others must now shoulder the load and carry on the work. Regardless of those who had turned from him, he looked forward to receiving the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge would give him. As we who are older also face being poured out like a drink offering, let us help and encourage others to serve the Lord with gladness!

LIFE IN ABUNDANCE 1

Under normal circumstances, no human being desires to be a nonentity. The various forces in the world however, are responsible for many people spending their entire life amounting to nothing and dwelling in the valley of not-well-to-do persons. The Almighty God Himself in making man did not intend for him to be a...More

Thoughts on the Epistle to the Romans (10)
A spiritual treasure had been entrusted to the apostle Paul that he wished to share with the Christians in Rome. It did not come from his own abilities or knowledge. What he wished to impart to them he had himself received...More
