Lessons on Josiah (2)—To Continue in Spite of All

[Josiah] stood in his place and made a covenant before the Lord, to follow the Lord, and to keep His commandments and His testimonies and His statutes with all his heart and all his soul, to perform the words of the covenant that were written in this book.
2 Chronicles 34:31 NKJV

Lessons on Josiah (2)—To Continue in Spite of All
A thing that is striking about Josiah's character is his perseverance despite the fact that there seemed to be no future, no matter what he could do! His commitment to God was unwavering! Nothing was going to stop him from doing according to "the words of the covenant."

After hearing that God's judgment was coming, but also that he would die in peace and not fall under that judgment, Josiah committed himself even more! "The king stood in his place and made a covenant before the Lord, to follow the Lord, and to keep His commandments and His testimonies and His statutes with all his heart and all his soul."

Josiah's piety is remarkable! Why continue in a cause that seems lost? He knew it would not change the coming of the judgment of God, yet he was committed to go on for the Lord. Josiah was not considering his personal interests, but those of the Lord.

Today, if everything looks morally bleak, am I going to live for myself or for the Lord, by doing what is pleasing to Him? Our Lord Jesus had an inimitable zeal for God, but He invites us to follow Him. We are encouraged, in these last dark and cold moments of the night, just before sunrise, to continue relentlessly to walk in the path the Lord has laid out for us.

Let us walk carefully with the strength the Lord gives us, not with the strength of our old nature. Let us walk by the Spirit in this path which is difficult but so much approved by the Lord who will reward the faithful servant. The Lord is coming! Let us watch, be faithful to the Lord, and pray to be kept so, until He comes!

HOW PERSUADED?

In 2 Timothy 4:10, Demas - a co-labourer with Paul was floored by his love for the world. He became a victim of comfort. Today, many people are also becoming prayerless and shifting their or trust from God to uncertain riches. They are now tending towards the belief that money can fix everything. If you are in such...More

A LESSON FROM GOLIATH

At the first sight of David, Goliath despised him. He was amazed that the children of Israel could find no other man to fight him than a young boy. As if that was not enough, Goliath did not see any conventional weapon of war on David. So he asked, "Am I a dog?" The first lesson we have to learn from this story as...More

Always Be Humble

Who am Ithat you have brought me this far?' 2 Samuel 7:18 (NIV 2011 Edition)
A MEMBER of parliament took his little daughter to visit Westminster Abbey. As she stood looking up at its magnificent columns, her father asked, What do you think, sweetheart?' With childlike candour she replied, I was...More

Forgive And Move On (2)

Anyone who starts ploughing and keeps looking back isn't worth a thing to God's Kingdom!' Luke 9:62 CEV

If you're wise, you'll do four things:

(1) Focus on the road ahead. By looking in the rear-view mirror instead of what's up ahead, you'll end up in a ditch. Focus on the fact you've...More
