Making the Most of What We Have (3)

The people will curse him who withholds grain, but blessing will be on the head of him who sells it.
Proverbs 11:26 NKJV

Making the Most of What We Have (3)
The picture we have in this verse is that of the farmer who has a good supply of grain, from which is made bread, which is often called the staff of life. In a time of necessity when people are hungry, perhaps even starving, this farmer is holding it back, keeping it off the market, waiting for an even more advantageous time to sell it. His selfishness brings him hatred and cursing, while people appreciate and bless the person who helps meet this need.

What spiritual lessons does the Lord have for us in this verse? In John 6:35, Jesus told the crowd that was following Him, "I am the bread of life. He who comes to Me shall never hunger, and he who believes in Me shall never thirst." Every Christian has the Lord as his Savior and as his source of strength. He has God's Word and the indwelling Holy Spirit to give him understanding in it. He is a rich man in a needy, starving world bound for hell!

Can we present our Lord to the lost? Can we tell them what God is saying to them? Or do we feel inadequate? Uncomfortable? Afraid? Are we so happy enjoying Christ with fellow believers that we do not want to face an indifferent or possibly hostile world with the good news of salvation? Do we feel we need to know more, to have more preparation, a special call, or perhaps a degree from a Bible School or seminary? What is our excuse for holding back from sharing what we have with those in great need all around us? Could there be a better time, when God says, "Now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation"?

What will those who knew us well, with whom we often spent time, say as they think of us when they are in eternity, lost? But the ones we have led to the Lord or helped spiritually will forever be grateful and, above all, the Lord will bless and reward us.
