Joshua (18)—Serve in Perfectness and Truth

Now therefore, fear the LORD, serve Him in sincerity and in truth, and put away the gods which your fathers served on the other side of the River and in Egypt. Serve the LORD! And if it seems evil to you to serve the LORD, choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve … But as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.
Joshua 24:14–15

Joshua (18)—Serve in Perfectness and Truth
In the 24th chapter of the Book of Joshua, we hear Joshua’s final solemn public address to his people, Israel, and their leaders in particular. He begins by briefly giving a divinely inspired review of their history. We find here facts not mentioned in Genesis: for example, that Abraham’s father Terah and other ancestors were idol worshipers. Abraham’s calling and how his descendants came to live in Egypt are summarized, and Israel’s deliverance from bondage. “You dwelt in the wilderness a long time” sums up the 40 years in the wilderness. We see here that this conquest of Canaan was not the result of the swords and bows of the Israelites. God had fought for Israel!

This solemn review is followed by a challenge and exhortation: “Fear the LORD, serve Him in sincerity and in truth.” But if they were to do this they must put away the false gods that some of them evidently still clung to. God is not satisfied to be one God among others—He will not share His glory with anything or anyone else! This is just as true today as in Joshua’s day.

Whatever Israel might choose to do, Joshua’s position was clear: he and his house would serve the Lord. Joshua would soon pass on, but he had brought up his family to know and serve the Lord. May this be so for each of us and each one in our families too!

Eugene P. Vedder, Jr.

“A little while”—He’ll come again;
Let us the precious hours redeem,
Our only grief to give Him pain,
Our joy to serve and follow Him.

Jehovah appeared to him by the oaks of Mamre. And he sat at the tent-door in the heat of the day. And he lifted up his eyes and saw, and behold, three men standing near him.

FASTING IS NECESSARY

To relate with the Holy Spirit, you must be holy. You must also exercise a living faith, pray and fast. Some people will tell you that because had finished the work of salvation, there is no need to fast. To them, fasting is completely needless and is some form of self-inflicted punishment. But they forget that...More

REWARD FOR LABOUR

Jacob sojourned with Laban and laboured for him for several years. At first, his host was cheating him at every opportunity, and the years of his hard labour were almost in vain. Down the line, God had to intervene to enable Jacob eat the fruit of his labour. For a reader of this devotional, in every area that you...More

HOW PROPHETIC ARE YOUR NAMES?

The name you bear is very important because it serves as your identity and your future may be connected to it. The name a person bears is sometimes indicative of the experiences he or she will encounter in life. Take for instance Moses: this name means "drawn out of water"

Bible in one year:
