Precious Stones

Arise, shine; for your light has come! And the glory of the LORD is risen upon you … and His glory will be seen upon you.
Isaiah 60:1–2

Precious Stones
On the shoulders of Aaron, we find two onyx stones, each meticulously engraved with six names (Ex. 28:9–14). These names are also engraved on the stones of the breastplate, this time one on each stone (v. 21). The multiple names on a stone symbolize the collective aspect of Christ’s priestly service, where He has all of us in mind as a whole company. The single name per stone represents the individual aspect of what He has done (cf. Gal. 2:20; Rev. 1:5). Christ bears us up as a special people and chosen generation, and every believer in Christ is a living stone (1 Pet. 2:5, 9).

The two onyx stones were on the shoulders, symbolizing strength and government (Isa. 9:6). They might be hard to read for someone walking up to Aaron because they were meant to be Godward—they were memorial stones that, by application, etched us permanently in connection to God. The precious stones and the names engraved on each were prominently on his breast. Such is the nearness we have to the Lord Jesus. Power and love combine in our great High Priest, the Lord Jesus Christ.

The settings were made of gold, demonstrating that it is a divine work established by God Himself. The chains of pure gold emphasize this further—nothing will separate us from the security we have in Christ.

Notice how each stone on the breastplate was unique. The work of Christ has redeemed a company “out of every tribe and tongue and people and nation” (Rev. 5:9). Consider how each stone would reflect the light of the sun differently and with its own particular beauty. May we endeavor to reflect Christ in our lives, each in a unique way, and for His glory!

Today God is calling you (3)

I have prayed for you, that your faith will not fail.' Luke 22:32 NASB

God wants you to do His will, but you'll never reach the place of spiritual maturity in which you're free of Satan. You can overcome him, but you can't eliminate him. Look at Peter. He had only one gear: overdrive. He was always...More
