Gideon (4)—No One Can Serve Two Masters

The men of the city said to Joash, “Bring out your son, that he may die, because he has torn down the altar of Baal” … But Joash said to all who stood against him, “Would you plead for Baal? Would you save him? … If he is a god, let him plead for himself, because his altar has been torn down!”
Judges 6:30–31

Gideon (4)—No One Can Serve Two Masters
After his encounter with the Angel of the Lord, Gideon had built an altar to the Lord, calling it Jehovah Shalom: the Lord is Peace. But now, before God could use Gideon publicly, Gideon must be faithful at home. How could he challenge the enemies of the Lord when the altar of Baal stood unchallenged at his father’s home, object of the worship of the men of his city? Two altars dedicated to two different gods could not coexist.

Obediently, Gideon followed the Lord’s directions. He used his father’s second bull to tear down his father’s altar of Baal. He cut down the wooden image beside it, built a proper altar to the Lord in the open on top of the rock, used the wood of the image for firewood, and offered the bull as a sacrifice to the Lord. But because he was afraid to do it by day, he did it by night. Weakness and fear characterize Gideon but, thank God, he obeyed. God values our obedience and bears with our weaknesses and fears. He appreciates honesty.

The truth will come out! “No one can serve two masters” (Mt. 6:24). The stand we take for the Lord and against the world will become known. Notice, Gideon did not have to defend himself or his actions. God saw to it that someone else stood up for him. His own father was his first convert!

Eugene P. Vedder, Jr.

Oh, for grace to share Thy sorrow
Where Thou, Lord, wast crucified!
While we wait the cloudless morrow
When Thou reignest glorified;
Thy confessors,
Now Thy body, then Thy bride.

ACCEPTED TIME 2

God is never too early and He is never too late. His timetable is set on purpose; the purpose is not only for your sake but also for His. In all things, His name shall be glorified. No doubt, He would have been glorified healing Lazarus of his sickness, but this can't compare to raising him from the dead after four...More

IMPEDIMENTS TO PRAYER

Read:
. He is looking for those who are ready and committed to walking in His footsteps. God is holy, and He has called us to holy living. We are to do as He commands because we are the light of the world. God in Heaven is glorified when our light shines in the midst of the darkness of this world. If you...More

Standing in the limelight

Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am chief. However, for this reason I obtained mercy, that in me first Christ might show all longsuffering, as a pattern for all who are going to believe on him for everlasting life.
1 Timothy 1:15.16.
