Let Us Not Forget but Remember Him
Psalm 139 shows us that God knows all about us, even all of our thoughts. Psalm 103 tells us He knows our frame and that we are dust. He knows what we are made of and what we are like. He knows that we are forgetful, and so He told His people Israel to do a number of things to help them not forget. He gave them the Sabbath, a day for rest but also for them to remember that they were slaves in Egypt (Dt. 5:15). He gave them the Passover to remind them of their deliverance from the oppression of Pharaoh. He gave them the Feast of Tabernacles to remind them that they dwelt in booths in the wilderness for forty years (Lev. 23:43). And as we saw in the opening verses, there was to be a reminder in their clothes that they were to do all the commandments that the Lord had given.

In Deuteronomy 8:19, God warned them that if they did forget Him there would be serious consequences. Sadly, Judges 3:7 tells us that the people did forget the Lord. The writer of Proverbs 30:7–9 wisely requests of God two things, so as not to forget Him.

For us too, how important to remember the Lord, to not forget Him. Knowing our need and our way of being, He gave us a memorial supper: “Do this in remembrance of Me” (1 Cor. 11:24). We are to do so every Sunday. Remembering Him in the way He requested helps us to keep our hearts in tune, thankful, obedient, and honoring Him. But let us also remember Him and think on Him not only on Sundays but every day: “so a book of remembrance was written before Him for those who fear the LORD and who meditate on His name” (Mal. 3:16).
