The Goodness of God

The LORD is good, a stronghold in the day of trouble; and He knows those who trust in Him.
Nahum 1:7

The Goodness of God
Nahum was tasked with prophesying against the city of Nineveh. As you read through this short three-chapter book, you realize that it is a book full of judgment. This might have been difficult for Nahum, whose name means comfort or consolation. I am sure he would have rather given comfort than judgment, as reflected in today’s text. But in all this gloom and judgment there is one bright spot! In spite of the coming judgment, Nahum declares, “The LORD is good”!

How encouraging it is to be occupied with the goodness of the Lord in difficult days! The Scriptures remind us that our God is a good God in creation. After all that He created, He could announce that “it was very good” (Gen. 1:31).

God’s goodness is also seen in the coming of the Lord Jesus; at His birth the angels proclaimed, “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, goodwill toward men!” (Lk. 2:14). In salvation, we are told, that the goodness of God leads men to repentance (Rom. 2:4). This goodness of God was displayed throughout the life of the Lord Jesus as He went around doing every manner of good (Acts 10:38). He is referred to as the Good Shepherd (Jn. 10:11, 14).

God is good in His creation, in His character, as displayed in the life of Christ, and He desires to see this goodness displayed in His Church today (Gal. 5:22). When you and I are discouraged or depressed with the evil all around us, it is encouraging to remember that our God is a good God. Being occupied with His goodness will remind us that He is our stronghold in the day of trouble! The psalmist would remind us about the Lord, “You are good, and do good” (Ps. 119:68). When we are tempted to be occupied with the darkness or difficulties all around us, let us remember the goodness of our God!
