Lessons on Jehoshaphat (5)—Help in Times of Need

Jehoshaphat feared, and set himself to seek the Lord, and proclaimed a fast throughout all Judah. So Judah gathered together to ask help from the Lord; and from all the cities of Judah they came to seek the Lord.
2 Chronicles 20:3-4

Lessons on Jehoshaphat (5)—Help in Times of Need
Jehoshaphat heard that the people of Ammon, Moab, and Mount Seir came to battle against him. The reaction of Jehoshaphat is fear. We might be surprised to read that the king feared! But it is exactly the reaction we should have when we face the enemy of our soul. If there is confidence in us, in our means, strength, or logic, we will not see our weakness and seek the help of God. Fear led the king to seek the Lord and proclaim a fast.

Many in Judah came, and "Jehoshaphat stood in the assembly of Judah and Jerusalem, in the house of the Lord," and prayed. His short prayer is beautiful and very instructive. Jehoshaphat's prayer is based on who God is and on His promises. Then he presents their situation and asks for the Lord's intervention, not knowing themselves what to do and recognizing they had no strength. Yet he finished his prayer in saying, .

The answer did not take long to come: "Do not be afraid nor dismayed because of this great multitude, for the battle is not yours, but God's" (v. 15). The Lord personally takes charge of the situation: "You will not need to fight in this battle stand still and see the salvation of the Lord, who is with you" (v. 17). Jehoshaphat prayed with faith and received the answer with equal faith. He simply bowed his head with his face to the ground before the Lord and worshiped Him. The next day, they enjoyed great deliverance!

This is a beautiful example, and a good reminder for us to turn to God when faced with difficulties and trials. These are occasions where our God and Father in Jesus Christ wants to show His greatness, and that there is none like Him to help and to save.

A WORD ON CLEAVING TO THE LORD (2)

Observe, they are exhorted with purpose of heart to cleave to the Lord. A distracted heart is the bane of a Christian. When my heart is filled with Christ, I...More

THE BREVITY OF TIME

How recklessly this age speeds to self destruction! The word of God is accurate and authentic in its prediction of the latter end of the world and in warning His saints of the end times, so that they are not overtaken by the prevalence of evil in this age! In virtually every facet of life, there is an overturning...More
