King Uzziah (2)—He Loved the Soil

Uzziah dug many wells, for he had much livestock, both in the lowlands and in the plains; he also had farmers and vinedressers in the mountains and in Carmel, for he loved the soil.
2 Chronicles 26:9-10

King Uzziah (2)—He Loved the Soil
Following the death of King Uzziah's spiritual mentor, Zechariah, he continued to strengthen himself and his nation. We read that he "made war against the Philistines," those inveterate enemies of Israel who were characterized by afflicting God's people and raiding the fields and food storage silos. Uzziah was able to get victory over these enemies: "God helped him against the Philistines" and other enemies (v. 7).

Two things came about as a result of his military victories: (1) "his fame spread as far as the entrance of Egypt," and (2) "he became exceedingly strong" (v. 8 cf. v. 15). There was nothing wrong with this; God had given him the victory, which produced a period of economic and military prosperity for the nation. But danger lurked. Fame and recognition is always a danger for the believer; of course, I'm not referring to worldly fame—very few Christians are in danger of that—but even recognition by one's brethren can be a source of weakness and stumbling. Secondly, the newfound strength that Uzziah was experiencing also was a danger. There was the possibility he could rely on his own strength and not upon God—this is a danger for us as well.

Another interesting detail about Uzziah which the Spirit of God records is that "he loved the soil." He loved gardening! He dug wells, hired farmers, and apparently loved to get personally involved in this work. There is nothing wrong with this; we all need hobbies and some natural interests. However, with all the distractions and entertainments available today, may we be watchful that they do not draw our hearts away from God!

And the angel of the LORD appeared unto the woman, and said unto her, Behold now, thou art barren, and bearest not: but thou shalt conceive, and bear a son. Now therefore beware, I pray thee, and drink not wine nor strong drink, and eat not any unclean thing: For, lo, thou shalt conceive, and bear a son; ...More

What shall the baptized for the dead do if those that are baptized rise not at all? Why also are they baptized for them?
(1 Corinthians 15:29)

Who are "the dead," and who are those "baptized for the dead"? The next verse gives an important hint: "Why do we also endanger ourselves every...More

KEEP YOURSELF HUMBLE

Several years ago, I was on a visit to a parish of our church in Ilesha (a town in southwest Nigeria) on the same day that a Bible Study was to take place. Because I wanted to be blessed, I sat down in the congregation waiting for the Bible study teacher to commence the lesson for the day. However, an overzealous...More
