Christ Our Savior (5)—Fulfillment of Promise

David a man after My heart, who shall do all My will. Of this man's seed according to promise has God brought to Israel a Savior, Jesus.
Acts 13:22-23

Christ Our Savior (5)—Fulfillment of Promise
Why was David called a man after God's own heart, who would do God's will? We know David sinned, and sinned grievously. Is it not because He also gave a faint reflection of our Lord Jesus Christ? David could set forth some of the features of the man that is pleasing to God, but in his Seed, the Lord Jesus, we see everything that is pleasing to God. All that our blessed Lord did was according to His Father's heart; and He did all the will of God: "For I am come down from heaven, not that I should do My will, but the will of Him that has sent Me" (Jn. 6:38).

Paul can tell these Jewish hearers that it was according to promise that God had sent this Savior to them. How wonderful that our God and Father is faithful, as well as the Lord Jesus, and they keep their promises to the Church as well as to Israel!

In both 2 Samuel 7 and 1 Chronicles 17, we read of Jehovah promising to David to give him a Seed to sit upon his throne. "I will be His Father, and He shall be My Son" (2 Sam. 7:14; 1 Chr. 17:13) is quoted in the book of Hebrews (1:5), and applied to the Lord Jesus. In 2 Samuel, which looks at man as responsible, we see the possibility of failure and chastening, which we know came to pass with the kings that sat on David's throne after him. However, in 1 Chronicles, which emphasizes God's sovereign purpose, grace, and working, there is no mention of failure. Here the Lord Jesus, the Son of David, is especially in view. "I will establish His throne forever" (1 Chr. 17:12). We know that at His first coming, the Jews refused the Lord Jesus: "We will not that this man should reign over us" (Lk. 19:14). Soon, though, He will sit on His earthly throne of glory and reign as the Son of David over all Israel. For our God keeps His promises!

THE SACRIFICES IN THE BOOK OF NUMBERS (8)

Whoever touches the body of anyone who has died, and does not purify himself That person shall be cut off from Israel. He shall be unclean, because the water of purification was not sprinkled on him.

GOD HAS A SUBSTITUTE

One thing we need to learn in today's reading is that God always has a substitute. If God says He wants you, rejoice! However, be careful, because even as He is choosing you, He has already prepared a substitute.
