Repentance and remission of sins

Thus it is written, and thus it was necessary for the Christ to suffer and to rise from the dead the third day, and that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in His name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.
Luke 24:46–47

Repentance and remission of sins
After His resurrection, the Lord Jesus explained to His disciples that people could receive forgiveness of their sins because of His suffering and death on the cross. Therefore, the apostles were commissioned to proclaim the gospel of God’s grace to everyone. The starting point of their mission was to be Jerusalem.

In that city, human hatred against the Son of God had reached its peak. There the people had rejected Him and demanded of Pilate, “Crucify Him!” Now they, of all people, were to be the first to receive the offer of God’s grace for the forgiveness of their sins. So great and inconceivable is divine love!

All people today are still offered forgiveness of sins in the name of the Saviour. No one is too guilty; no one has sunk too low. Even those who until now have not wanted to know about Jesus Christ or have even been hostile towards Him are addressed. God loves everyone and wants to show grace to all.

But He expects us to repent of our sinful lives. This doesn’t mean exercises of penance or self-punishment. Repentance in the biblical sense means recognising God’s judgment on our words and actions: we have sinned against Him! It is a matter of acknowledging our guilt before God and sincerely confessing it to Him. Then He forgives all our sins because Jesus Christ bore the punishment for them on the cross.

Today’s reading: Job 37:5-24 · Acts 17:22-34

Today God is calling you (3)

I have prayed for you, that your faith will not fail.' Luke 22:32 NASB

God wants you to do His will, but you'll never reach the place of spiritual maturity in which you're free of Satan. You can overcome him, but you can't eliminate him. Look at Peter. He had only one gear: overdrive. He was always...More
