This Bible passage contains a powerful...

Truly, these times of ignorance God overlooked, but now commands all men everywhere to repent, because He has appointed a day on which He will judge the world in righteousness by the Man whom He has ordained. He has given assurance of this to all by raising Him from the dead.
Acts 17:30–31

This Bible passage contains a powerful proclamation, an urgent commandment from God! God commands the people – He doesn’t make a suggestion to them that is open to interpretation. He, the Creator, has the right to speak like this.

The word repentance is foreign to many today. Some might say, “I’m trying to live a decent life, so why do I need to repent?”

The fact is, however, that no one as they are can satisfy God’s righteous standards. Therefore, people have to fear the day when God will “judge the world in righteousness”. But God wants all people to be saved from judgment. That’s why He sent His Son to die on the cross, for it is His earnest desire that lost people receive forgiveness. If He therefore commands everyone to repent, then this is a warning given out of love and whose urgency we must take seriously!

So how does a person repent, in concrete terms? Repentance involves that a person acknowledges God’s judgment on him and confesses his sins. Repentance also means a change of heart. We must turn from our wayward paths and submit ourselves to God’s commands and His will.

Jesus Christ, the Son of God, has risen! Because He lives, we can have hope. But one day He will also “judge the world” and thus carry out God’s plans.

Today’s reading: Zechariah 1:18-2:13 · Mark 12:18-27
