The Lord Jesus had freed Mary Magdalene from...

Now when He rose early on the first day of the week, He appeared first to Mary Magdalene, out of whom He had cast seven demons.
Mark 16:9

The Lord Jesus had freed Mary Magdalene from the bondage of Satan. In response, she had followed Him and served Him (Luke 8:2–3). After His death and burial, she was the first to go to the tomb early on Sunday morning. She did not hesitate to make this journey out of the city before sunrise.

When she arrived at the tomb, she saw that the stone had been rolled away from the entrance and the tomb was empty. Immediately, she ran to Peter and John to inform them of her distress: “They have taken away the Lord out of the tomb”. Mary Magdalene sought the living among the dead, even though the Lord had previously announced His resurrection. But her lack of understanding was overshadowed by the bright glow of her affection for the Lord.

The disciples came to the tomb and saw that it was empty. Then they went home again. But Mary Magdalene remained outside the tomb, weeping. She missed her Lord, for He meant everything to her. She couldn’t imagine a life without Him.

To a heart that longs for the Lord Jesus in this way, He will draw near. So He came to Mary Magdalene and revealed Himself to her. She was the first person He encountered after His resurrection.

Her affection for the Lord and her desire for communion with Him shame us because our hearts are often so lukewarm towards Him.

Today’s reading: Jeremiah 17:1-11 · Luke 23:13-25
