Shame and disgrace

I gave My back to those who struck Me, and My cheeks to those who plucked out the beard; I did not hide My face from shame and spitting.
Isaiah 50:6

Shame and disgrace
In today’s verse, the Lord Jesus prophetically speaks of the sufferings inflicted upon Him by people shortly before His crucifixion. It impresses us how calmly He endured all the abuse.

“I gave My back to those who struck Me.” This word was fulfilled when Jesus stood before the Roman judge. In John 19:1, we read, “So then Pilate took Jesus and scourged him.” Cruel lashes from the whip struck the Saviour’s back, and He endured the blows quietly. As the Son of God, He could have put an end to this wickedness immediately. Yet He did not, because everything had to be fulfilled concerning Him.

“I did not hide My face from shame and spitting.” This prophecy came true twice. First, Jesus had to endure the despicable treatment from the respected members of the Jewish Sanhedrin: “Then they spat in His face and beat Him” (Matthew 26:67). A few hours later, the rough Roman soldiers treated Him just as cruelly: “Then they spat on Him, and took the reed and struck Him on the head” (Matthew 27:30). What a disgrace it was for the Lord Jesus to be so abused by people! How it pained Him that they responded to His love with malice!

Yet He remained calm and submissive. With what great dignity He endured this humiliation!

Today’s reading: Jeremiah 22:13-30 · Luke 24:44-53

And the angel of the LORD appeared unto the woman, and said unto her, Behold now, thou art barren, and bearest not: but thou shalt conceive, and bear a son. Now therefore beware, I pray thee, and drink not wine nor strong drink, and eat not any unclean thing: For, lo, thou shalt conceive, and bear a son; ...More

Grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
(2 Peter 3:18)

God in His grace has centered every blessing for us in Christ. Without Christ, we have nothing, nothing but our sins; with Christ we have all things, and therefore want nothing in addition to Christ. As...More

SPIRITUAL WARFARE I

When we are told to put on the whole armour of God, one thing becomes clear instantly. This is the fact that there is a God. We cannot be talking of the armour of God if there is no God. Anyone who thinks that there is no God is a fool (Psalm 14:1). You have to pray that God would reveal Himself to you. The...More
