Bringing light into darkness

In Him was life, and the life was the light of men.

Then Jesus spoke to them again, saying, I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life.

John 1:4; John 8:12

Bringing light into darkness
During our journey through Peru, we visited one of the many caves found in the mountains. We were all equipped with headlamps. The guide led the way, showing us various rock formations. Although his explanations were interesting, the darkness started to weigh on us over time. We were relieved when we emerged into daylight again.

This experience made me once again aware of how oppressive spiritual darkness can be. We live in a godless world darkened by sin. How much we need a light to drive away the darkness in our lives! This light is the Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of God. He Himself said, “I have come as a light into the world, that whoever believes in Me should not abide in darkness” (John 12:46).

When we open our hearts to Christ and let Him shine into our lives, we also realise that not only is the world far from God’s standard, but also that much filth has accumulated within us. Everything wrong, everything unjust comes to light. This doesn’t make us happy. Now there are two options:

o Either we clean up our lives by sincerely confessing our sins to God. Then He forgives us and cleanses us from all unrighteousness.

o Or we shut ourselves off from the light by turning away from the Lord Jesus. In this case, darkness will remain in our lives.

Today’s reading: Jeremiah 26:1-24 · Romans 2:17-29

HOW PROPHETIC ARE YOUR NAMES?

The name you bear is very important because it serves as your identity and your future may be connected to it. The name a person bears is sometimes indicative of the experiences he or she will encounter in life. Take for instance Moses: this name means "drawn out of water"

Look For Teaching Moments

What do these stones mean?' Joshua 4:21 NIV

One of the most effective ways to teach is through teaching moments'. Jesus did that. When a fig tree didn't produce fruit, He cursed it and it immediately withered up. That got the disciples' attention (see Matthew 21:18-22). Then He explained that unless...More
