Discarding the wrong

Therefore, laying aside all malice, all deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and all evil speaking …
1 Peter 2:1

Discarding the wrong
In today’s Bible passage, we as Christians are called to get rid of every form of evil in our hearts, on our tongues, and in our behaviour. First and foremost, we mustn’t give the old nature within us any opportunity to express itself. If it has come to the forefront due to lack of care, we need to immediately condemn its negative manifestations.

o Malice includes everything we do intentionally to harm someone. It starts with bad thoughts and can be manifested in both evil words and malicious actions.

o Our words contain deceit when we consciously withhold certain facts to present ourselves in a better light. We deceive others so that they will have a good opinion of us.

o Our behaviour is characterised by hypocrisy when we show something that isn’t real. We want to appear more pious than we actually are.

o In our hearts, envy can rise towards the abilities or possessions of a fellow Christian. We may want to possess something that God has given to someone else. Envy often leads to conflict (1 Corinthians 3:3).

o Evil speaking is nothing more than defaming other believers. This destroys trust and good relationships among each other. Proverbs 16:28 says, “A perverse man sows strife”.

Today’s reading: Jeremiah 36:16-32 · Romans 8:12-17

HOW PROPHETIC ARE YOUR NAMES?

The name you bear is very important because it serves as your identity and your future may be connected to it. The name a person bears is sometimes indicative of the experiences he or she will encounter in life. Take for instance Moses: this name means "drawn out of water"

Look For Teaching Moments

What do these stones mean?' Joshua 4:21 NIV

One of the most effective ways to teach is through teaching moments'. Jesus did that. When a fig tree didn't produce fruit, He cursed it and it immediately withered up. That got the disciples' attention (see Matthew 21:18-22). Then He explained that unless...More
