Bitterness

Hannah was in bitterness of soul, and prayed to the LORD and wept in anguish.
1 Samuel 1:10

Bitterness
Hannah was childless. This distress weighed heavily on her. Her husband Elkanah tried to comfort her but he couldn’t truly understand her. Therefore, his comfort was of little help.

For years, Hannah carried this sorrow in her heart until she became bitter.

In her desperation, she brought her distress to God and poured out her heart to Him. She could tell Him everything that troubled her. She prayed to Him, as David did: “I cry out to the LORD with my voice; with my voice to the LORD I make my supplication. I pour out my complaint before him; I declare before Him my trouble” (Psalm 142:1–2).

Bitter feelings can also spread in our hearts when a hardship persists and we cannot overcome it. This adversely affects our spiritual life.

That’s why it says in Hebrews 12:15, “lest any root of bitterness springing up causes trouble, and by this many become defiled”.

If we lose sight of the grace of God, a problem can make us bitter.

To rid our hearts of bitterness, there is only one remedy: Let us bring to God what distresses and torments us. Let us present our distress to Him and tell Him that we cannot cope with it. He will not reproach us but will help us to accept the situation from Himself and find peace in Him.

Today’s reading: 1 Chronicles 14:1-17 · Psalms 87:1-7

NEW LIFE IN CHRIST

There is a nature that is of the Earth and there is a nature that is of Heaven. Since the fall of man, the earthly nature of man has become corrupted and therefore is greatly under the influence of the kingdom of Satan. Characteristic features of this nature are: wickedness, moral perversion - sodomy and all sorts of...More
