Like a spider’s thread

But God be thanked that though you were slaves of sin, yet you obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine to which you were delivered.
Romans 6:17

Like a spider’s thread
I had to travel for work often, which wasn’t easy for my family. One day when I came home, my little daughter had an idea: if she tied me up, I couldn’t leave any more. She began to circle around me with a spool of thread. After a few rounds, she stopped and said with a radiant smile, “Daddy, try to free yourself!” I could have easily torn the few threads apart, but I didn’t want to spoil my child’s fun so I pretended as though I couldn’t do it.

Happily, she jumped around me and continued to tie me up. When I tried to free myself later, it was too late. What had been child’s play at the beginning was now impossible for me. “Now you can’t leave any more!” exclaimed the little one, clapping her hands. I had no choice but to call my wife for help.

This experience reminds me of the garden cross spider. It wraps its prey with a fine but very strong thread until it can no longer move.

The devil uses exactly the same tactic. He seduces people to sin. They do it once, twice, three times – until a sinful habit forms from which they can no longer break free.

Only the Son of God can free a person from this dependence. He leads everyone who believes in Him and trusts Him into freedom. Now the liberated one is able to obey God from their heart.

Today’s reading: 1 Chronicles 28:1-21 · 1 Timothy 4:1-6
