Haste (1)

Do not be rash with your mouth, and let not your heart utter anything hastily before God. For God is in heaven, and you on earth; therefore let your words be few.
Ecclesiastes 5:2

Haste (1)
In the Bible, we are repeatedly warned against speaking or acting quickly and thoughtlessly. Perhaps it is in our nature to always react quickly. Sometimes it is also the old nature within us that immediately prompts us to an unwise action. Therefore, let us take these warnings to heart.

In today’s verse, we are warned not to pray hastily and thoughtlessly to God. We should always be aware that we are talking to the great, almighty God. Deep respect for Him helps us find the appropriate words when praying. This reverence for God doesn’t exclude us from confidently and openly bringing all our concerns to Him.

“Do not hasten in your spirit to be angry, for anger rests in the bosom of fools” (Ecclesiastes 7:9). How easily we become annoyed or angry when we see, hear or experience something that displeases us. Then it is important to examine our motive: Are we upset because we are personally insulted? Or is it a justifiable anger because the honour of the Lord is being touched?

“They soon forgot His works” (Psalm 106:13). What is said here about the Israelites is also not unfamiliar to us. How quickly we forget the help of the Lord that He has shown us in a difficulty! As a result, we are ungrateful and demonstrate little trust in God in the face of the next problem.

Today’s reading: 2 Chronicles 11:1-23 · Revelation 2:8-11

The Lord Jesus told His disciples that they would be given an understanding in "the mystery of the kingdom of God." He also spoke of another class of people to whom everything would be spoken in parables; these He described as, "them who are without." How solemn that God should...More

Bear ye one another's burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ.

Brethren, if a man be overtaken in a fault, ye which are spiritual, restore such an one in the spirit of meekness; considering thyself, lest thou also be tempted. Bear ye one another's burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ.
(Galatians 6:1-2)
