When the employer finds out

I acknowledged my sin to you, and my iniquity I have not hidden. I said, I will confess my transgressions to the LORD, and you forgave the iniquity of my sin.

Blessed is he whose transgression is forgiven.

Psalm 32:5.1.

When the employer finds out
Karim works for a powerful Arab emir. The latter owns a large park with exotic birds, among them a duck of a very rare species that he is very proud of. One day Karim notices something emerging from a thicket and, as a reflex reaction, fires his catapult. Oh dear! He has killed the emir's duck! Terrified, he buries the duck, thinking no-one has seen him. Soon the disappearance of the duck has been discovered. The emir becomes fearfully angry. Searches are organised, but in vain.

Shortly afterwards the cook tells Karim to fetch some water. He refuses. The cook then whispers, "When our employer finds out who killed the duck " Totally crushed, the unfortunate Karim is forced to comply. The cook exploits the situation to demand all kinds of tasks from him. Every time Karim tries to object, the threat is repeated: "When our employer knows " and Karim gives way.

The poor lad is at his wits' end. One day he finally falls at the feet of the emir, confesses his wrong and is pardoned. He leaves his employer's presence feeling free and rejuvenated. He meets the cook who tells Him to fetch some water. When he refuses, and the cook insists: "When our employer finds out ", Karim replies triumphantly, "He knows, and He has forgiven me!"

This story illustrates the liberating experience of every sinner who confesses his wrongs to God: he knows that he has been forgiven and freed from the weight of his guilt and Satan's bondage. He has peace with God.

Today's reading: Exodus 29:19-30 · Luke 12:13-21
