Crying in their fear, “Master, Master, we are...

Then he (Jesus) arose and rebuked the wind and the raging of the water. And they ceased, and there was a calm. But he said to them, Where is your faith? And they were afraid and marvelled, saying to one another, Who can this be? For he commands even the winds and water, and they obey him!
Luke 8:24.25.

Crying in their fear, "Master, Master, we are perishing!", the disciples awakened the Lord. Yet with the Son of God in the boat, how could they perish?

If He is in our life's "ship", i.e. if we stand in a living relationship to Him, we can never be lost. Through the Holy Spirit Christ is not further distant from us today than He was from the disciples then.

With authority the Lord commanded the wind and the waves, showing that He is not only the Master of the disciples, but also of all creation. He speaks a word, and it happens. The threat died away, and calm arose.

"Where is your faith?" the Lord asked His disciples. If they had looked to their Master and His power and love, their faith would have been strengthened and all fear driven away. They had the faith to turn to Him, yet they were desperate. Now that the Lord has performed this amazing miracle, they were stunned: the result, that great calm, was unexpected.

"Who is this?" This cry of relief and astonishment is at the same time an admission of their mediocre knowledge of the Son of God.

The Lord Jesus is greater than all that can terrorise or depress us. The best way to fortify our faith is to get to know Christ better.

Today's reading: Exodus 33:12-23 · Luke 14:12-24
